History of the Land & Community Values
César Chávez Park sits on land with a long and layered history. Long before Sacramento was a city, the region was home to Indigenous peoples who lived, stewarded, and cared for these lands. Over time, the area became part of Sacramento’s civic and cultural center, serving as a gathering place for community expression, public events, and social movements—including labor history and the experiences of farmworkers and working class communities that helped shape the region.
As the community considers future name ideas, we invite you to reflect on the histories, cultures, and values that matter to Sacramento today.
